Smart circuits are manufactured using an efficient multi-stage process. First, copper films are laminated onto the polyurethane films. Printed circuits are produced in a subsequent structuring operation with highly effective adhesion. The coated sheets are then formed as required using conventional the rmoforming. "The films are resistant to standard engraving and image processing," said Wolfgang Stenbeck, a film expert at Covestro. "The formable electronic systems can also be laminated directly on textiles, as in the case of the luminous dress". The production technology was developed as part of several projects funded by the European Commission, including STELLA and TERASEL. The objective is to produce two-dimensional electronic circuits cost-effectively using conventional forming processes. The freely formed components can be seamlessly integrated into low-power electronic components. They can be processed using standard industrial PCB equipment and are also suitable for applications with higher currents or voltages.
