Manufacturing is the production of goods for use or sale using labor and machinery, tools, chemical and biological processing, or formulation. The term can refer to a range of human activity, from crafts to high technology, but is more commonly applied to industrial production, where raw materials are transformed into finished products on a large scale. Such finished products may be sold to other manufacturers for the production of other more complex products, such as aircraft, appliances, furniture, sports equipment or cars, or sold to wholesalers, who in turn sell them to retailers, who sell them. Manufacturing or manufacturing process are the steps through which raw materials are transformed into a final product. The manufacturing process begins with the design of the product and the specification of the materials from which the product is manufactured. Manufacturing is turned into all types of economical systems. In capitalist free markets, goods are manufactured by the demand of millions of small independent producers in direct competition with each other. In captive capitalist markets, goods are mass-produced by legally protected publishing and manufacturing monopolies. In the collectivist markets, the manufacture of goods is totally directed by the State according to necessity. Modern manufacturing includes all the intermediate processes necessary in the production and integration of the components of a product. Some industries, such as semiconductor and steel manufacturers, use the term manufacturing.

The manufacturing sector is closely related to engineering and industrial design. Examples of major manufacturers in North America are General Motors Corporation, General Electric, Procter & Gamble, General Dynamics, Boeing, Pfizer and Precision Castparts. Examples in Europe include Volkswagen Group, Siemens and Michelin. Examples in Asia include Toyota and Bridgestone.
