Abstract: In this paper we have come up
with a newproposal for the charging of the
batteries with thehelp of human body
temperature when the deviceis still in use.
The basic idea is to create a low-power,
low-voltage circuit for both controlling
and switching the charging of the battery.
A voltage gradient is created with respect
to the change in temperature by the serially
connected thermocouples which form the
thermopile. This voltage generated is used
to charge the battery. ASIC is an integrated
circuit used for specific use rather than
general use. Ananalog ASIC is used for
controlling and switching the charging
current. Lithium ion battery which is used
to store the charge is used for its portable
and bio-free nature. The battery is a button
type battery with power rating close to
100µW.
Keywords: Thermopile, ASIC.
INTRODUCTION:
An artificial pacemaker is a small
device, about the size of a pocket watch,
thatis placed under the skin near our heart
to helpcontrol our heartbeat. People may
need apacemaker for a variety of reasonsmostly
dueto a group of conditions called
arrhythmias, inwhich the heart's rhythm is
abnormal. Thebattery is nothing short of
essential inperforming the pacemaker’s life
sustainingfunction. The weak spot in the
early pacemakerwas the power source,
which was incapable ofproviding adequate
power to permit long-termpacing of the
human heart.
The batteries which were used
earlier forcharging the pacemakers had to
be monitoredevery six months and also
their lifetime was limitedto just two or
threeyears. To overcome
theseshortcomings, we have arrived at a
design
whichconverts body heat into electricity
and uses thiselectricity to charge low
power devices.Researchers have confirmed
that production of heatin the body can
create electricity. The applicationsof this
proposal are not limited to pacemakers
alone, but can be extended to charge
glucosemeters, implantable cardioverterdefibrillator(ICD),
also in military, for
soldiers in battlefields asPersonal battery
chargers, medical sensors,displays, gun
sights, and range finders.etc
