It is a Specialized Deep Foundation Technique used to improve the soil to a considerable depth, up to 75 meters. It uses a probe called Vibro-flot (which can be electrically or hydraulically operated) to strengthen the soil by deep compaction to make the soil adequate to withstand the proposed imposed load.
It involves the introduction of granular filler material (sand or granite) to form stone columns that are interlaced with the surrounding soil. The treatment is to provide adequate loading capacity; Restrict total and differential settlements to acceptable magnitudes under the proposed load and provide acceptable long-term yield of treated soil.
Type of vibroflotation method
• Vibration compaction method
• Vibro replacement method (wet top feed)
• Vibration displacement method (dry method)
1. Vibrocompaction
It is the densification of granular soil. The natural reservoir, as well as the artificially recovered sand, can be compacted to achieve the desired load capacity and minimum settling. This is used for the purely sandy soil of the loose constituent.
2. Vibro-Replacement
This method involved partial replacement of poor soil material, by washing the weak soil with Water / Jet air and replacing with granular material. This is the installation of stone column (composed of granite). This can be used in various types of soil including clay (soft, firm, rigid), lateritic soil, sandy clay (of various constituents) and peat soils.
3. Vibration Displacement
This approach is used when the environment plays a critical role in the project. Can be top or bottom feed. Little or no water is used in construction. The vibro-flot is inserted into the floor and the floor moves laterally as the stone column is formed and compacted.
