Milk production is a very important part of the agricultural economy in the state of Punjab. Punjab is one of the smaller states of the Indian Union with a total area of 50,362 Sq. Kms., Which is 1.5% of the Indian land mass. Dairy farming is a former subsidiary profession in rural Punjab. Punjab is the second milk producing state in India, producing about 10% of the country's milk production, that is, 8 million tonnes per year.
The Federation of Cooperative Milk Producers of the State of Punjab Limited (MILKFED) was born in 1973 to improve dairy production in the state of Punjab. The main objective was to provide a lucrative milk market to state milk producers by adding value and marketing the products. Another objective was to provide technical inputs for the improvement of milk production.
Although the federation was recorded quite early, it came in its true form in 1983 when the milk plants of the former Punjab Dairy Development Corporation Limited were awarded to the Cooperative Sector under Operation Flood. The move was carried out in the state to provide better treatment to farmers and better products to customers.
MILKFED is established as a three tier system with the Federation as the highest authority body at the state level, the District Milk Unions and Cooperative Societies at the village level. The organization has continually advanced towards its coveted goals well defined in its statutes.
