New materials and construction techniques are required to provide Civil Engineering alternatives to traditional road construction practices. Traditional techniques have not been able to withstand the burden of mixed traffic for a long time. Therefore, the pavement requires overlap. To overcome this problem the inclusion of fibre in pavements is adopted today. This paper highlights the use of discrete fibre in road construction. Recently, geosynthetics have been used to reinforce and separate the base course material for aggregate surface roads and flexible pavements. The inclusion of discrete fibres increases the shear strength and ductility.

Concrete shrinkage cracking is a major problem in concrete concrete pavements, especially in tropical regions. To overcome the shrinkage cracking of smooth concrete, it is sometimes suggested to add synthetic fibre to the concrete mix. This paper briefly discusses the effects of the addition of discrete polypropylene and fibrillated fibre on the properties of a mixture of paving concrete from 48 MPa to 28 days of compression. Six concrete mixtures were made with 0.05%, 0.10% and 0.15% by volume fibre in addition to the control concrete mixture. In this study discrete and fibrillated polypropylene fibre was used. Properties such as sedimentation, compressive strength, drying shrinkage and abrasion resistance of the concrete were evaluated. The study suggests a significant reduction in settlement and shrinkage of drying without significant changes in the compressive strength of fibre reinforced concrete mixtures. The weak matrix in the concrete, reinforced with steel fibres, evenly distributed throughout its mass, is greatly strengthened, causing the matrix to behave as a composite material with properties significantly different from conventional concrete. Due to the enormous improvements achieved by the addition of fibres to concrete, there are several applications in which fibre reinforced concrete (FRC) can be used intelligently and beneficially. These fibres have already been used in many large projects that include the construction of industrial floors, pavements, cladding of roads, etc. in India. The main fibres in common commercial use for civil engineering applications include steel (SFRC / SFRS), glass, carbon and aramid. These fibres are also used in the production of continuous fibres and are used as they are placed in reinforcing steel. The high percentages of steel fibres are widely used in pavements and tunnels. This invention utilises Infiltrated Suspended Fibre Concrete (SIFCON). The mat-like fibres are also used in the development of high performance structural compounds. High Performance Fibre Reinforced Concrete (HPFRC) called Slurry Infiltrated Mat Concrete (SIMCON), issued in the production of high performance concrete. The use of basalt fibres is increasing in Western countries. Steel fibres are also used in the production of new generation concretes such as reactive powder concrete (RPC), ductile and compact reinforcement concrete (CRC).
