Project title: Construction of new residential building

Project goals:
i. To create residential accommodation with privacy and hygienic and homely atmosphere for assistants and residential core-members.
ii. To welcome girls residential core-members .
iii. To create accommodation for guests .
iv. To create space for permanent vocational unit in the present Asha Niketan residential building.
v. To create space for celebration programme .
vi. To create space for prayer room for the spiritual nourishment of the members.
Project description and background:
Asha Niketan Asansol started in April 2007 with the welcome of two mentally handicapped boys into a residential setting in order to live a family life and provide a home. Officially inaugurated in July 2007, it is the fifth community of Fellowship with Mentally Retarded (India) -FMR, a Society, registered in 1970 under the Mysore Registration of Societies Act 1960, with the express objective of providing residential, educational, vocational and sheltered work opportunities to people with mental or multiple disabilities.
At present there are 29 people with disability in total ( 6 residential and 23 day scholars ) in Asha Niketan Asansol.
The Congregation of Christian Brothers donated two acres of land on a 99 years lease to FMR India. The building the community lives in now ,was structured as a hospital for the students of St. Vincent’s School and there are two dormitory rooms and another three rooms in the building . The whole building is surrounded with corridor which is not much useful for the community . The residential project consists of one dormitory room and another room which is not big enough for 15 members at present. One dormitory room is being used for the day care centre and one room is being utilized as family quarter for the community leader and one of the room is used for the community office. .As the community started there were only two residential core-members and their assistants so that there were not much difficulty with the accommodation. Gradually, the number of community members have increased and now 6 boys and 8 assistants live permanently in the community. Hence at present we face a shortage of rooms to accommodate people, especially as friends or guests visit our community for a few days. Last few years we were getting rooms from the brothers to accommodate our guests but now all of their accommodation is full as many trainee brothers are staying with them. Moreover, it is difficult to accommodate volunteers and assistants properly, too.
On 2008 community started a vocational unit as Christian Brothers temporarily provided a two storage small building for the vocational workshop where 12 adult people participate in skill training programme. Now the brothers want to get back that building to utilize for their school programme. So we will have no vocational unit as soon as the brothers take over that building from us.
So our plan at present is that the present building will be used for vocational units , day care centre and family quarters for the assistants . The community has to build the new residential building with enough space and privacy for the residential members and also keeping the possibility for future expansion for welcoming girls core-members. So we will appreciate and welcome financial support to construct this residential building from individuals , funding agencies , corporate bodies and any other agencies .

Financial and Administrative Management:
Governing Council Asha Niketan Asansol: There are 12 members on the Governing Council. The Chairman is Mrs. Seema Paul, Principal of St. Patrick`s High school , GT Road , Asansol – 713301, the local treasurer is Mr. Dulalnidhi Sarkar , Doyal Complex,Radhanagar Road,P.O. Radhanagar,Flat No. C/111,Burdwan-713325, W.B. The council meets once every two month. The community leader, Mr. Balaram Samanta, who has been appointed on May, 2007, is an ex-officio member of the Governing Council. The accounts are audited locally every six months, and a quarterly financial report is presented to the Governing Council by the local treasurer.
FMR India: Fellowship with the Mentally Retarded is the National Body authorizing the policies and practices governing the Governing Councils of the five Asha Niketans. The Governing Body of FMR India is comprised of the chairmen,2 Governing Council delegates and the community leader from each community plus the President, National Treasurer and General Secretary. FMR India had an annual audit with Auditors: Mssrs Mark D`souza , 201, Brigade Gardens, 19, Church Street , Bangalore-560 001. FMR has obtained Tax exemption under S80G Income Tax Act 1961 and has facility to receive foreign funds under the Foreign Contributions Regulations Act 1975. The President for FMR India is Mr. F.T.R.Colaso , and the National Treasurer Mr. Henry J.Pinto.
