The aim of this project is to determine the distance underground cable damage from the base station in kilometres by using the Arduino board. Underground cabling system is a common practice followed in many urban areas. While fault occurs for any reason, at the time the repair process that is associated with this particular cable is difficult due to not knowing the exact places fault cable.
The proposed system must find the exact location of the fault. The project uses the standard concept of Ohm's law, that is, when the low voltage DC is served by feeder end of the serial resistor (cable lines), then the current will vary depending on the location of the malfunction in the tail. In case of short circuit (SHORT CIRCUIT to Earth), series resistor voltage is changed accordingly, which is then fed to the built-in ADC Arduino board to develop accurate digital data to be displayed in kilometers.
The project is built with a set of resistors, representing cable length in creating KM's and malfunctions is done using a set of radio buttons on each known KM to double-check the accuracy of the same. The fault occurs at a certain distance and the corresponding phase is displayed on the LCD screen, matched to the Arduino board. This project can be enhanced by using a capacitor in the circuit for AC impedance, which can even locate open cable, unlike short-circuit fault by using only resistors in the circuit of DC, as can be seen in the above proposed project.
