Tele-immersion is a technology that will be implemented with Internet2 that will allow users in different geographical locations to meet in a simulated environment to interact. Users will feel as if they are looking, talking and meeting face to face in the same room.
This is achieved by using computers that recognize the presence and movements of individuals and objects, tracing those individuals and images and reconstructing them on a stereosensitive surface.
3D reconstruction for tele-immersion is performed using stereo, which means that two or more cameras take snapshots of the same object, continuously perform distance calculations and project in the simulated computer environment to replicate the motion in real time.
