At present, almost all modern light, medium and heavy diesel engines are turbocharged. A turbocharger consists of a turbine driven by the exhaust gas of the engine which is coupled directly to a compressor. Fresh air from the atmosphere is drawn to the turbocharger compressor where its pressure and therefore density are raised before entering the engine cylinder. The greater mass flow of air in turbocharged engines compared to natural aspiration engines of the same swept volume In an increase in engine power, lower fuel consumption, better transient operating response and lower specific exhaust emissions ( In g / kWh).
