Tubeless tires or tires (in some Commonwealth nations) are pneumatic tires that do not require a separate inner tube. Unlike pneumatic tires that use a separate inner tube, tubeless tires have continuous ribs integrally molded into the tire bead so that they are forced by the air pressure inside the tire to seal with the metal edge flanges of the tire wheel.
Many patents covering tubeless tires have been filed. Killen Tire applied for a patent in 1928 and obtained patent GB 329955 in the United Kingdom in 1930. Wingfoot Corporation, a subsidiary of Goodyear Tire, obtained a patent in South Africa in 1944. Due to technical problems, most of these designs saw only production limited or were abandoned.
Frank Herzegh working for BF Goodrich applied for a patent in 1946 and finally received US patent 2587470 in 1952 in the United States. In 1955, tubeless tires became standard equipment in new cars. BF Goodrich had to defend his patent before the court several times, due to the similarities of previous designs. The main difference between the design of BF Goodrich and its predecessors was the use of butyl rubber, which was more resistant to air leakage than the natural rubber used in the other designs.
