TSP Complex Ltd

INTRODUCTION
The ability of food production systems to feed the world’s growing population is an increasing cause for concern and there is an urgent need for more effort to develop new and innovative ways of achieving food security. Stagnant productivity and declining farm incomes in many parts of South Asia have made the issue of crop sustainability more and more relevant. Unbalanced crop nutrition often results in a decline in crop productivity; sub-optimal realization of genetic potential under high-yielding cropping systems; and negative environmental consequences. Hence, it is the right time to review the progress of research carried out in this field and to develop updated strategies for sustaining crop productivity. On an average, the rice-growing area of Bangladesh is declining at a rate of about one per cent per year, mostly as a result of industrialization. The two most recent major flood and cyclone events in 2007 have also severely impacted on the rice supply in the country. Moreover, the current crisis in fertilizer availability only aggravates an already difficult situation. Nutrient management has therefore become a key priority for increasing grain production in the country, along with the need to optimize use of limited fertilizers, and to improve soil fertility in intensively cultivated areas. It is likely that food insecurity will continue to prevail in the near future and there should be a concerted nationwide effort in Bangladesh to increase grain production.


Background of TSP
Triple Super Phosphate Limited is a Public Sector Enterprise registered as a private Limited Company situated at Patenga, Chittagong having its registered office at BCIC Bhaban., 30-31, Dilkusha, C/Area, Dhaka-1000. It is under the administrative control of Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) one of the largest public sector corporation of the country having big and medium sized industries covering at present Nitrogenous and Phosphatic fertilizer, Cement, Chemical, Sanitary Ware etc. TSP complex was established with the objective of producing TSP fertilizer. According these two units viz TSP-1 and viz TSP-2 were set up with installed capacity of 152000 MT (TSP 1- 32000 MT and TSP 2- 120000 MT respectively). Among the units TSP 2 was commissioned earlier. TSP 1 unit was went into commercial production unit April 1977 and TSP 2 in September, 1974. After liberation the complex came under the control of the then Bangladesh Industrial Development Corporation(BIDC) and later on it was placed under Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation(BCIC). TSP complex is the only Phosphate fertilizer Factory of the country. Initially the factory started with production of TSP. Later on since 1990 manufacturing of SSP fertilizer was started and has already established itself as a major fertilizer of the country. On account of technical problem in TSP 1 unit, the phosphoric acid plant of the unit was abandoned and closed. Due to increasing demand of SSP fertilizer in the country , the facilities of TSP1 were converted to produce SSP. In TSP 2 unit necessary modification was carried out to produce both SSP and TSP in the unit. The original TSP1 and TSP2 plants are now known as Unit1 and Unit2 respectively. Production of this factory is increasing day by day in 2002-03 total production of 200528 MT Phosphoric fertilizer (TSP 65049MT + SSP 135489 MT) was achieved. The basic raw materials are Phosphate rock and Elemental Sulphur which are imported.

It is located on the bank of of the river Karnaphuli at Patenga which is about 4km from
Chittagong airport and 12 to the south of the Chittagong city. This location is in
Chittagong Industrial Area having communication facilities by rail, road and river.
