A treadmill is a device generally for walking or running or climbing while staying in the same place. Treadmills were introduced before the development of powered machines, to harness the energy of animals or humans to do the job, often a type of mill that was run by a person or animal treading a wheel sledge to grind grain. In later times, treadmills were used as punishment devices for people convicted of forced labor in prisons. The terms treadmill and tread were used interchangeably for the mechanisms of power and punishment.
More recently, treadmills are not used to harness power, but as exercise machines to run or walk in one place. Instead of the user feeding the mill, the machine provides a mobile platform with a wide conveyor belt driven by an electric motor or a flywheel. The belt moves backwards, requiring the user to walk or run at a speed that matches that of the belt. The speed at which the belt moves is the speed of walking or running. Therefore, the running speed can be controlled and measured. The most expensive and heavy versions are motorized (usually by an electric motor). The simpler, lighter and less expensive versions passively resist movement, moving only when walkers push the belt with their feet. The latter are known as manual treadmills.
According to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, treadmills remain the best-selling category of exercise equipment by a wide margin. As a result, the treadmill industry has hundreds of manufacturers around the world.
