However both NPN and PNP bipolar transistors can be operated as an "ON / OFF" type solid state switch by polarising the terminal of the transistor base differently from that of a signal amplifier. Solid state switches are one of the main applications for using the transistor to toggle a DC output "ON" or "OFF". Some output devices, such as LEDs, require only a few milliamps with logic level DC voltages and can therefore be controlled directly by the output of a logic gate. However, high power devices like motors, solenoids or lamps often require more power than that supplied by an ordinary logic gate, so transistor switches are used.
If the circuit uses the Bipolar Transistor as a Switch, then the polarization of the transistor, either NPN or PNP, is arranged to operate the transistor on both sides of the "I-V" characteristic curves we have seen previously.
The operating areas for a transistor switch are referred to as the Saturation Region and the Cut Region. This means that we can ignore the operational Q-point polarization and voltage divider circuits required for amplification, and use the transistor as a switch by driving it back and forth between its "fully-OFF" (cut) and "fully - IN "saturation regions" as shown below.

The pink shaded area at the bottom of the curves represents the "Cut" region, while the blue area on the left represents the "Saturation" region of the transistor.
