Touch Sensors
#1

Overview
Touch sensors are finding their way intomany applications, from mobile phones toremote controls and appliance control panels.Mechanical button and switch replacementcontinues to be implemented in a wide variety ofapplications. Touch sensors with simple linearor rotational sliders, rotary wheels and touch padsoffer significant advantages for more intuitiveuser interfaces. They are more convenient touse without moving parts and provide increasedreliability. Using touch sensors allows thedesigner greater freedom, while reducing overallsystem cost. The consumer can now enjoy amore appealing, intuitive interface often with amore contemporary look.Freescale’s touch sensors are designed to detecttouch and even the presence of objects withoutrelying on physical contact. Touch sensorscan support multiple electrodes, where severaldifferent applications can be controlled by onesensor. By multiplexing the electrodes, the singlesensor becomes an extension for detectionat multiple points. For example, capacitivetouch sensors are user interface controllersthat manage multiple configurations of touchpads, sliders, rotary positions and mechanicalkeys. Freescale offers a broad portfolio of touchsensors as both standard products and softwaresolutions for applications ranging from gamingcontrollers to occupant detection. Target marketsinclude consumer, appliance, automotive, industrial, medical and networking
