Tidal or tidal energy is a form of hydroelectric energy that converts the energy obtained from the tides into useful forms of energy, mainly electricity. However, many recent technological developments and improvements, both in design (eg tidal dynamics, tidal lagoons) and in turbine technology (eg new axial turbines, cross flow turbines), indicate that the total availability of Tidal energy can be much greater than what was supposed. , and that economic and environmental costs can be reduced to competitive levels.

Historically tides have been used both in Europe and on the Atlantic coast of North America. The incoming water was contained in large storage ponds, and when the tide went out, it became hydraulic wheels that used the mechanical energy it produced to grind the grain. The first occurrences date from the Middle Ages, or even from Roman times. The process of using falling water and rotating turbines to create electricity was introduced in the United States and Europe in the 19th century.

The world's first large-scale tidal power plant was the Rance Tidal Power Station in France, which began operation in 1966. It was the largest tidal power station in terms of production until the Sihwa Lake Tidal Power Station opened in Korea of the South in August 2011. The Sihwa station uses marine wall defensive barriers with 10 turbines that generate 254 MW.
