Tabletop computers
Introduction

“Table top Computer is PC tucked inside black table base with 30-inch touch screen.”
Multi-user:
Face-to-face and simultaneous operations
Arbitrary orientation of objects:
Multiple rotating documents. Anti-alias continuously, especially text
Rotation of the entire virtual tabletop:
Mega-pixel operation rotation-sensitive items.
Characteristics
Direct-touch interfaces have two inherent characteristics:
 User Interface targets can be occluded by the fingers, and
 The large touch-area of a fingertip needs to be mapped to a screen-point.
 The input area of any given user/point is larger, and a different shape, than the single pixel defined by a mouse pointer.
 Windows/widgets may be rendered off-axis (rotated).
 A single user may be touching multiple UI-controls/screen points simultaneously.
 Multiple users may be touching the same UI-controls/screen points simultaneously.
 Multiple users may be touching different UI-controls/screen points simultaneously.
 Multiple users may be entering text
Specifications
Tabletop Computer is tucked inside a shiny black table base, topped with a 30-inch touch screen in a clear acrylic frame.
Five cameras that can sense nearby objects are mounted beneath the screen.
Users can interact with the machine by touching or dragging their fingertips and objects such as paintbrushes across the screen, or by setting real-world items tagged with special bar-code labels on top of it.
About MiCRoSOFT SURFACE
Microsoft Surface
 Microsoft Corp. has taken the wraps off "Surface," a coffee-table shaped computer that responds to touch and to special bar codes attached to everyday objects.
 Unlike most touch screens, Surface can respond to more than one touch at a time.
 When customers plop a phone down on the screen, Surface will read its bar code and display information about the handset. Customers can also select calling plans and ringtones by dragging icons toward the phone.
Future of tabletop computers
 Computer scientists hope to incorporate this kind of technology in peoples’ daily lives… Future goals are to surround people with intelligent surfaces.
 Eventually every household may have one in place of their everyday coffee table.
Conclusion
• Tabletop Computer is the future of computers.
• Fundamentally changes the way we interact with technology.
• Surface takes existing technology and presents it in a new way. It isn't simply a touch screen, but more of a touch-grab-move-slide-resize-and-place-objects-on-top-of-screen, and this opens up new possibilities that weren't there before.
