The popularity of mobile computing and communications devices can be traced to their ability to deliver information to users when needed. POrtable devices like PDAs, portable PCs, Communicators, Pagers and Mobile Phones all need a standard. The aim of the syncML is to provide a synchronization standard for these. synchronize the updates with the applications and information back at the office while using the applicaton at other place is the need for most of the users. For mobile devices, different, proprietary data synchronization protocols are being evolved. But they are not universally acceptable, nut remain confined to subset of devices, and for for selected transport. IBM, Lotus, Motorola, Nokia, Palm Inc., Psion, Starfish Software, Ericsson are the firms driving this innovation.
This standard is officially supported by well over 200 device manufacturers.
Outline of the specification
symmetric goals are present for this common synchronization protocol. That is, synchronize networked data with any mobile device and at the same time Synchronize a mobile device with any networked data.
characteristics needed by this protocol for achieving these objectives will be :
-Operate effectively over wireless and wireline networks
-Enable data access from a variety of applications
-Multiple transport protocols support
