Growing demand for electricity, expansion of renewable energy, and progressive gearboxing of the electricity grid face the challenge of higher-level operators, more distributed generation and changes in the load flows in the grid networks Fault currents in case of short circuits. This trend will require substantial expense to replace transformers and switchgear in stretched sections of the power distribution infrastructure where fault current levels threaten to exceed the classification of the operating equipment in place. The Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL) launched by Nexans is a fundamentally new autonomous system that protects the operating equipment of the network from harmful current spikes during fault events and circuit feedback. The SFCL can be deployed to facilitate network expansion and avoid pre-programming upgrade. It also enables profitable network optimization and stabilization.
Events in the electric power industry, such as deregulation, demands for a better quality of energy and reliability, the advent of high temperature superconductivity and push to use technology for greater benefits, have renewed interest in Fault current limiters. Superconducting FCLs will become very important as the deregulation environment is depleted and utilities are looking for more efficient and cost-effective methods to couple grids, improve power quality and delay costly upgrades.
