Panki Thermal Power Station is located in Panki in the Kanpur district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, about 16 km from Kanpur. It has an installed capacity of 220 Mega Watts. The power plant is owned and operated by Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam. The plant was established in two stages, both with two units. The first stage is no longer in operation. The machinery for the second stage is from Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited. Coal to all these units is fed from the coal mines of Bharat Coking Coal Limited, Coalfields Eastern Limited by rail. The last unit was commissioned in 1977.

The Panki thermal power station, which has so far gained a bad name for spreading air pollution and causing respiratory disease, will be upgraded so that it can seek environmental clearance from the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB), which Has recommended its closure to the higher authorities.

In a letter to the UPPCB, the authorities of the power plant have detailed the various methods of modernization that they would adopt to combat environmental pollution.

"The thermal power station has submitted a project of Rs 14.16 crore in which would be the installation of a sewage treatment station costing Rs 7. Also cross a water recirculation system that is prepared that stops the ash to discharge in The Pandu River, "said UPPCB regional official Radhey Shyam, who said he had received the letter on Monday.

Notably, the water recirculation system would not only allow the ash to be treated. It would also allow reuse of treated water. Authorities also have plans to improve the decanter.

An on-line monitoring system with an opacity meter would be installed inside the plant, which would automatically stop the station's fly ash emission once it started to exceed the allowable limit, Shyam said.

According to reports, the authorities have written to the UPPCB to inform them that the station would have to be closed for a period of 60 to 70 days for its update.

The UPPCB, after notifying the Panki thermal plant for violating air and water pollution regulations, recommended that it be closed.

The action was initiated in the complaints of the locals who alleged that they were getting respiratory problems and that the ash coming out of the station was flying in their houses.

According to UPPCB officials, the adverse impact on vegetation and respiratory problems in humans was increasing in the colonies located near the industrial area of Panki due to the uninterrupted increase of PPS and ash in the area surrounding.

"We had no other option to recommend for closure," said Shyam, who said he had received the villagers' complaints in writing.

Furthermore, the levels of PMS were found to be 250 milligrams per cubic meter against 150 milligrams per meter cube, which meant a 44 percent increase.

According to experts, increasing levels of PMS can cause respiratory problems in asthmatic patients. It was also learned that the fly ash produced by the power plant after burning coal affects the local vegetation. Toxic ash reaches the fields and can damage crops and standing plants.

After the warning from the authorities of the UPPCB, officials of the power plant have begun the process of modernization, which is expected to give some respite to the inhabitants of Panki from air pollution.
