Verka Milk Plant, Amritsar was the first dairy plant established in the northern region. The first stone of the plant was laid by the then Honorary Prime Minister of Punjab, S. Partap Singh Kairon on August 20, 1959. The plant was inaugurated by Dr. AM Thomas, then Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, Government of the India On March 23, 1963. The plant team was endowed by the United States of America, assisting and thus providing the Indian People with a more nutritious diet containing the most perfect food of nature.
At first the processing capacity of the plant was 60,000 LPD, with 5.0 tons per day of drying capacity and 10,000 liters of liquid milk supply under the control of the Punjab government. This was the first compound milk plant in northern India and was established in the village of Verka on the outskirts of the city of Amritsar. Therefore the brand of all products was named as "VERKA" which is international famous brand for milk products.
In 1966, its control was transferred to Punjab Dairy Development Corporation Limited and then transferred to Milkfed Punjab under the Cooperative Sector in 1983. The Amritsar Coop. Milk Producers' Union Limited was established and registered on 28.2.1979 and began to operate on 01.07.1988. The range of products includes Bag Milk, Ghee, Skim Milk Powder, Curd, Sweet Flavored Milk (PIO), Paneer, Milk Pie, Panjiri, Lassi & Kheer, etc.
Taking into account milk production in the Milkshed area of Amritsar, the processing capacity of the plant was expanded to 1.5 Lac (LPD) in 1998 and the drying capacity 10.0 MT / day to facilitate the producers and cope with The standard quality. The milkshed area of this union has been covered with six established milk cooling centers namely MCC Mehta, Patti, Lopoke, Bhathal Sehja Singh, Khadaor Sahib, Fatehgarh Churian and four on hired sites namely Bhikhiwind, Ajnala, Tahli Sahib and Kukrawala. In addition to that, Milk Union has also installed 51 BMCs and 79 AMCs in different MPCS. Today, 731 MPCS and 300 commercial milk producers are pouring milk into this plant. Milk Union is providing A.I facilities to 452 milk producer cooperatives through 125 cluster centers and 2 individual A.I centers. In addition to this, 29 A.I cluster centers have been established in the border area of the Tarntaran and Amritsar districts covering 227 eight block villages.
The plant has also adopted the requirements of the Quality Management System according to the international standard ISO-9001: 2008 and the Food Safety Management System according to IS 15000: 1998 on Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) A the consumers.
The plant is supplying Verka Milk and Fresh Milk Products to the following reputable institutions in and around Amritsar, namely Central Jail No. 1,2 and 3, Pingalwara Amritsar, Asr Police Line, Central Head Khalsa Diwan, Academy Meri Peri, Javahar Navodaya Vidyala Lapoke, BHEL Goindwal, SSP Police Line Daburji and many BSF Army camps.
