Hello I (KAJAL PARMAR) am a student of electrical engineering from NIT HAMIRPUR . I want to do intern at Bhakra Nangal Dam in 2018 ( from june-july). I would like to know about the details of it . Waiting for your reply.

It is the largest and most important multipurpose project that bears the name of the two dams built in Bhakra and Nangal on the Satluj River. It is a joint venture of the states of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan designed to take advantage of the precious water of the Satluj for the benefit of the affected states. The Bhakra dam is one of the highest straight gravity dams in the world. It has been built in Satluj at the site of the Bhakra Gorge near Rupnagar (Ropar). The dam is 226 meters high and 518 meters long with a maximum width at the base of 362 meters.

The dam has created a large reservoir of water that is 88 km long and 8 km wide with a storage capacity of 986.8 million cubic meters. This reservoir is called Lake Gobindsagar after Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth guru of the Sikh community. The Nangal dam was built in Nangal about 13 km downstream from the Bhakra dam. This 29 meter high, 305 meters long and 121 meters wide is an auxiliary dam that serves as a balance reservoir to take the daily fluctuations of the Bhakra dam.

The Nangal Hydel canal has a length of 64.4 km, a channel 42.65 m wide and 6.28 m deep. It has been cemented along its entire length to prevent leaks. It is one of the longest cemented channels in the world. Take off from the left bank of the river and flow through the congested topography of the steep slope. There is a drop of 70 meters in elevation within a distance of 64 km. Its main function is to spin the turbines of the powerhouses located under the Nangal dam, but it also supplies water to the irrigation channels of Bhakra.

The energy houses have been built to generate hydroelectric power from the water of the Satluj River. A power plant was built in Ganguwal, about 19 km downstream from Nangal. Another powerhouse has been built at a distance of 29 km from the Nangal dam. This is known as the Kotla power house. The energy houses of Ganguwal and Kotla have 2 units of 24 MW each and a unit of 29 MW. The third house of power is in Rupnagar. Two powerhouses have been built on the Bhakra dam, one of which is on the left and the other on the right bank of the river. The installed capacity of these two power plants is 450 MW and 600 MW respectively.
