Global demand for timber is increasing at a rapid pace, but the timber supply is running out. It has been found through research that bamboo can adequately replace wood and other materials in construction and other works. Industrially treated bamboo has shown great potential for the production of composite materials and components that are cost effective and can be used successfully for both structural and non-structural construction applications. Bamboo is one of the oldest traditional building materials used by mankind. The culm of bamboo, or stem, has become a wide diversity of products ranging from domestic household products to industrial applications. Bamboo is quite common for bridges, scaffolding and dwellings, but is usually used as a temporary outer structural material. In many overcrowded regions of the tropics, certain bamboos provide the right material that is cheap enough and abundant to meet the widespread need for affordable housing. With the advancement of science and technology and the scarce supply of wood, new methods are needed for processing bamboo to make it more durable and more usable in terms of building materials. Studies have been conducted on the basic properties and processing of bamboo in various types of composite products. Bamboo has several unique advantages like the ability to grow fast with a high yield and also matures quickly. In addition bamboo can be grown abundantly and also at a lower cost which makes it more economical.
Bamboo is mainly a tropical and subtropical plant that is suitable in China. Many studies find that physical and mechanical attributes vary with respect to diameter, length, age, type, position along the culms, and moisture content of the bamboo. The use of bamboo as reinforcement in concrete is a comparatively new concept, but has developed due to the increase in the demand for low-cost building material. One of the significant properties that would make bamboo an attractive alternative to reinforced concrete steel is its tensile strength. The tensile strength of bamboo is greater than most wood products which are advantageous, but is about half the tensile strength of the steel. Bamboo is mainly a tropical and subtropical plant that is suitable in many countries. The strength of the bamboo as a concrete reinforcement is much lower than the steel bar reinforcement. However, one of the merits is a cheap and replenishing agricultural resource and abundantly available. Due to excellent properties such as high strength to weight ratio, high tensile strength, shear strength and free cutting and processing, the bamboo as potential reinforcement material instead of steel is widely available in structural concrete elements. This paper presents some of the existing studies and technology of application of bamboo reinforced concrete elements in construction structures such as reinforced concrete columns of bamboo, beams, slabs and walls.
