Download Meego Operating System for Netbook

Meego is a new operating system for netbooks. It is open source, and completely free. Meego is a Linux based OS for netbooks, and is an integration of two separate previous projects: Moblin by Intel, and Maemo by Nokia. And the cross of these is Meego.

When I read about Meego, I just loved the screenshots of this operating system. So, I decided to try it by using Live image (Live image lets you try OS from your USB drive, without installing it). I tried it on my Acer Aspire One D255 netbook, that has a Windows XP installed.

If I have to summarize this review in one sentence, this is what I will say:

Meego is the coolest operating system for netbooks ever.

And I am not exaggerating.

Download and Install Meego:

I downloaded Meego v1.1 for Netbooks (Google Chrome Browser) version. The download size is around 800 MB. Then I followed instructions here to copy Meego to my 1GB Flash drive. The whole process was quite easy.

To run Meego, I turned off my netbook, plugged in the Flash drive, and the started netbook. It directly booted into Meego. Interestingly, Meego did not have to ask me for any device driver, and all the functions of my netbook were working. I was directly able to connect to my wireless network, and it detected keyboard, mouse, webcam and other components correctly. I was quite surprised by this. Obviously, ease of use was a big factor in minds of Meego designers, and they designed the whole experience around it.

After doing this so called installation, I started playing around with Meego, and absolutely loved it.

Meego Interface:

Meego

Meego is very well designed. Till now I was a big fan of Ubuntu Netbook edition because of its ingenious design. But Meego has now left that far behind. It looks very fresh, very easy to use, and not at all Linux like. In fact, I had to go back to Meego website to confirm that it is indeed Linux based.

Meego designers have done an amazing job at coming up with a design that looks so good on even small screen of netbook. Meego takes a completely different approach to organizing interface. Instead of organizing all the applications in form of a menu, it has organized interface in form of Zones. When you start Meego, you “Myzone” section which shows you your appointments and your calendar on left side. Below that, there are icons for some of the popular applications like Google Chrome browser, Evolution Mail, Media Player, and Help. On right side, you see your popular applications.

In a nutshell, when I login to Meego, I would immediately see everything that I would like to see, and that too just in one place. Why did Microsoft never thought about that? Now I really want my Windows 7 laptop to start like this Smile

The other great design feature of Meego is the floating toolbar at the top. Again, this is structured unlike anything I have seen till now. It autohides, and when you move your mouse to top of the screen, it comes back automatically. This ensures that there is not a constant space usage of already small screen of netbook.

Meego Toolbar

This toolbar has following sections:

Home Section: This is what I described earlier, and when you login to Meego you are directly taken to here.
Zones Section: When you are using multiple applications, Meego shows them here. It lets you organize the applications in form of zones so that you place similar applications together.
Applications Section: This section is where all the applications are available. There is a big section on left side that shows your favorite applications. On right side, applications are structured in categories. Various caetgories available are:
Accessories: This includes applications like Calculator, file browser, Editor, Screenshot tool, File search, and more.
Games: This section includes some popular games like Solitaire, Mines, and Neverball.
Internet: This section includes Google Chrome Browser, Mail, Messenger, and Sync software.
Media: This section includes Image Viewer, Media Player, Sound Recorder, and Webcam software.
Office: This section has Calendar, Contacts, and Tasks only. I was expecting to see some full fledged office suite like OpenOffice in this. But then I remember that “Editor” is included in Accessories section.
System Tools: This includes bug reporting tool, disk usage analyzer, Disk Utility, Terminal, Software Catalogs, and more.
All in all, the section is quite intuitively designed, and it is very easy to locate any application that you are looking for. Next section on toolbar is Status.

Status Section: This is another section which made me fall in love with Meego. This section lets you monitor statuses of different social networking applications from one place. Currently you can configure your Twitter and Last.fm accounts, but I am sure other social networking services are not away. The presence of a dedicated section for this also shows the importance Meego assigns to this, and their target demographic.
People Section: People section is basically Empathy IM client. You can login to multiple IM networks all from this one place. All your chat conversations happen here, so that there aren’t too many chat windows floating around. Again, the interface is very well designed.
Internet: This section shows you all the pages that you are browsing currently, and also your favorite pages.
Media: This section lets you access your entire media library, and play anything from that. It comes integrated with Banshee media player, but interface is designed so that it gels well with overall Meego interface.
Devices: This section shows some quick settings, your folders, and also any device that you might have connected to Meego. To test it out, I plugged in my iPod touch, and Meego immediately recognized that (but I wasn’t able to import my iPod data).
After Devices, there are icons for Bluetooth, Wireless, current time, and battery charging status.

There were a couple of applications that I thought should have been there: an image editor, and an Office suite. However, you can add applications from Software Catalogs provided by Meego.

I really like the fact that Meego has been designed around social networking to stay connected to your friends. Apart from that, it makes very easy to play all type of media. Basically, everything that a normal home user needs from a netbook.

If you have been using any other Linux based OS on your netbook, try Live image version of Meego to see if you want to make the switch
