A real-time operating system (RTOS) is an operating system (OS) intended to serve real-time applications that process data as it enters, usually without buffer delays. Processing time requirements (including any operating system delays) are measured in tenths of a second or in shorter time increments. Either they are event driven or time-sharing. Event-driven systems change between tasks according to their priorities, while time-sharing systems change the task according to the interruptions of the clock.
A key feature of an RTOS is the level of consistency with respect to the amount of time it takes to accept and complete the task of an application; the variability is jitter. A hard-real-time operating system has less instability than a real-time soft operating system. The main design goal is not high performance, but the guarantee of a smooth or hard performance category. An RTOS that generally or in general can meet a deadline is a soft SO in real time, but if it can meet a deadline deterministically, it is a real-time operating system.
An RTOS has an advanced algorithm for programming. The flexibility of the scheduler allows for a broader orchestration of the computer system of the process priorities, but a real-time operating system is more often dedicated to a limited set of applications. The key factors in a real-time operating system are minimum interrupt latency and minimum wire switching latency; a real-time operating system is valued more by how fast or how predictable it can respond than by the amount of work it can perform over a given period of time.
