Air conditioning is one of the main consumers of electricity in many parts of the world today and currently air conditioning causes energy shortages in for example; China. Demand can be expected to increase due to changing work times, increased comfort expectations and global warming. The air conditioning systems in use are often built around vapor compression systems powered by grid electricity. However most of the ways of generating electricity today, as well as the refrigerants used in traditional vapor compression systems, have a negative impact on the environment. Solar air conditioning could be a way to reduce the demand for electricity. In addition many solar air conditioning systems are constructed in a way that eliminates the need for CFC, HCFC or HFC refrigerants. The purpose of the report is to describe and explain the operating principles of the components and the subsystem in general terms, so that the report can be used not only for those specifically interested in solar air conditioning, but for anyone interested in air conditioning, hot air conditioning and solar energy.
Solar air conditioning refers to any air conditioning (cooling) system that uses solar energy. This can be done through the conversion of passive solar energy, solar thermal energy and photovoltaic conversion (sunlight to electricity). The United States Energy Security and Independence Act of 2007 created funds from 2008 to 2012 for a new solar air conditioning research and development program, which should develop and demonstrate multiple new technological innovations and economies of scale in mass production . Solar air conditioning could play an increasingly important role in the design of zero energy and energy plus buildings.
