Soil liquefaction describes a phenomenon in which a saturated or partially saturated soil loses substantially resistance and rigidity in response to applied stress, usually seismic agitation or other sudden change in the stress condition, causing it to behave like a liquid. Saturated, loose (low density or non-compacted), sandy. This is because loose sand tends to compress when a load is applied; Dense sands by contrast tend to expand in volume or 'dilate'. If the soil is saturated by water, a condition that often exists when the soil is below the water table or sea level, then the water fills the voids between the soil grains. In response to soil compression, this water increases in pressure and attempts to leave the soil to areas of low pressure (usually upwards towards the soil surface). However, if the load is applied quickly and is large enough, or repeated many times (eg, earthquakes, storm surge load) so that it does not flow in time before the next cycle of Load A degree in which they exceed the contact stresses between the soil grains that keep them in contact with each other. These contacts between the grains are the means by which the weight of buildings and overlapping soil layers are transferred from the soil surface to layers of soil or rock to greater depths. This loss of soil structure causes it to lose all of its strength (the ability to transfer shear stress) and can be seen to flow like a liquid (hence "liquefaction").

Although the effects of liquefaction have long been understood, it has been brought to the attention of engineers after the 1964 Niigata earthquake and the 1964 Alaska earthquake. It was also an important factor in the destruction in the San Francisco Marina District during the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 and in the Port of Kobe during the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake. More recently, liquefaction was largely responsible for the extensive Damage to residential properties in the eastern suburbs and satellite townships of Christchurch, New Zealand during the 2010 earthquake in Canterbury and more widely again after the Christchurch earthquakes that followed in early and mid 2011. Many developed countries require That engineers consider the effects of land liquefaction in the design of new buildings and infrastructures such as bridges, dams and retention structures. Liquefaction of the soil, also called seismic liquefaction, failure in the soil or loss of force Behave temporarily as a viscous liquid. The phenomenon occurs in unconsolidated soils saturated with water affected by seismic waves (secondary waves), which cause earth vibrations during earthquakes. Although earthquake shock is the best known cause of liquefaction, certain construction practices, including soil blasting and compaction and vibroflotation (using a vibrating probe to change the grain structure of the surrounding soil), produce this phenomenon intentionally . Poorly drained fine-grained soils such as sandy, silty and gravel soils are the most susceptible to liquefaction.
