ABSTRACT
Using a GPS to navigate, a guard locates a car theft andutilizes vehicle tracking that is, at present, widely employed. In this paper the terminal device using a microcontrollercombines a GPS and a GSM/GPRS to make a portable andremote controlling device, and an embedded server is usedas a transfer location server. In this way one accomplishesreal-time vehicle trajectory monitoring. Clients can remotelymonitor a vehicle’s position anywhere. Besides, as we havedesigned the remote monitoring using a virtual comport tocombine the existing commercial or free electronic mapdirectly, we need not develop or revise the electronic mapsoftware.

1. INTRODUCTION
Being able to determine a vehicle’s location and its status isthe most significant task of a vehicle trajectory monitoringsystem, which is usually used concurrently with manytechniques such as mobile positioning, wirelesscommunication, geographical information and a computernetwork or networks to realize close combination, harmonyand unity of the information about an individual, a vehicleand a road [1].A Global Position System (GPS) offers the possibilityof localizing an object with precision anywhere on the Earth. The GPS localization principle uses triangulation. By meansof this method a point can be localized if the GPS knowsthree different vectors and has a precise timing of tracking[2].GSM-available services like SMS (Short MessageService) and GPRS data transmission (General PacketRadio Services) represent alternative modalities for remotemeasurement and control [3]. Mobile phones have becomeone of the most popular communication devices amongmost people around the world, and the SMS is popularamong mobile phone users as an inexpensive andconvenient method of communicating. Therefore, SMStechnology is a common feature with all mobile networkservice providers. Since the use of SMS technology is acheap, convenient and flexible way of conveying data, researchers are trying to apply this technology in manydifferent areas that presently are not covered by serviceproviders [4], [5].A geographic information system (GIS) is a system forcapturing, storing, analyzing and managing data andassociated attributes which are spatially referenced to theEarth [2]. At present, there are many commercial or freedigital GIS map systems that receive GPS data throughcomport from a GPS module to achieve vehicle positioning. In this paper we propose a GPS real-time vehiclemonitoring system that is composed mainly of a GPS tracer,a GPS data server and remote monitoring, as presented inFig. 1. The GPS data server receives information about thevehicle’s locations and the status of the vehicle sent by theGPS tracer. After converting and processing thecorresponding data the vehicle’s real-time location isdisplayed on the digital map of the remote monitor.Fig. 1 The block diagram of the GPS real-time vehicle monitoringsystemThis paper is organized as follows. Section 2 introducesthe design of GPS tracer. Section 3 describes the remotemonitoring design. Section 4 summarizes the results of thisexperiment, and Section 5 presents our conclusions.
2. DESIGN OF GPS TRACER
We design a GPS tracer (GPST) with a combined GPS/GSM/GPRS system. Vibration sensor and passive infraredsensor detect an invader and automatically send SMS to aremote client. When the vehicle is in an inactive state, thesystem automatically enters the save mode. Powerconsumption at save mode is about 65mW. Through 8051computation we obtain the longitude and latitude and thedistance. The client can remote-control the GPS tracerthrough SMS or transfer the GPS data to the GX serverthrough GPRS, and the system also supplies the voicecommunication function. By using an SMS command tomodify the GPRS reply time interval, the GPS tracersupplies a 10 second to one hour range. Table I shows thehardware specifications.
