Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS)

Date / Year : 2nd October 1975
*ICDS was launched on 106th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
*ICDS comes under the Ministry of Women and Child Development.
*The main beneficiaries ICDS scheme are children of 0-6 years of age, pregnant and lactating mothers and adolescent girls, in backward rural areas, tribal areas and urban shines.
*ICDS Scheme represents one of the world’s largest and most unique programmes for early childhood development.
*The key component of this scheme is the gender promotion of the girl child by trying to bring her at par with the male child.
For nutritional purpose ICDS provides
300 Calories (with 8-10 gms of Protein) every day to every child below 6 years of age.
*For adolescent girls it is up to 500 calories with up to 25 grams of day.
*The main services sponsored under ICDS are - Immunization, Supplementary nutrition, Health Checkup, Pre-school non-formal education, Nutrition and Health information, Referral services.
*The institution provides credit for ICDS projects (for the additional components like construction of Anganvadi buildings and CDPO’s office-cum.-godowns) is World bank.
*ICDS was launched on 106th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
*ICDS is the foremost symbol of India’s Commitment to children-India’s response to the challenge of prodding pre-school education on one hand and breaking the vicious cycle of malnutrition, morbidity, reduced learning capacity and mortality on the other.
