An intelligent sensor is a device that takes input from the physical environment and uses built-in computing resources to perform predefined functions by detecting specific inputs and then processing the data before transmitting it. Intelligent sensors allow for more accurate and automated collection of environmental data with less erroneous noise between accurately recorded information. These devices are used to monitor and control mechanisms in a wide variety of environments, including smart grids, battlefield reconnaissance, scanning, and a large number of scientific applications.
The new sensors are required to be small, cheap and smart. This deals with smart sensors integrated on a single chip: a Verilog / VHDL model of an IEEE1451.2 smart sensor is proposed to obtain a portable STIM block suitable for customizable compactable solutions and allow low cost and large scale production. In order to evaluate the results of the proposed model, work prototypes have been constructed and some tests have been performed in a real case (chemical detection sensors). The proposed Verilog / VHDL model has been compared to traditional software-based microcontroller solutions that show that execution time improvement of more than 50% can be achieved. Finally, to exemplify the effectiveness of a portable VHDL model, a single-chip sensor with USB interface and integrated IEEE1451 structures has been experimentally performed and characterized.
