Introduction to Smart Homes What is a Smart Home?
Smart homes are where a single button controls lighting, heating, security, music, memory clocks and voice prompts
- in fact, everything digital
Also known as the connected home or the digital home, the smart home is all about convenience and simplifying your life -and it's literally changing the way people live.
There is virtually no limit to what you can teach your house to do.
TV, alarm, lights, thermostats, locks, etc., would take place -only now your house is doing all the work instead of you.
Introduction to how Smart Homes work
When you're not home, nagging little doubts can start to crowd your mind. Did I turn the coffee maker off? Did I set the security alarm?
Smart homes connect all the devices and appliances in your home so they can communicate with each other and with you.
Anything in your home that uses electricity can be put on the home network and at your command
Smart Home Software and Technology
Smart home technology was developed in 1975, when a company in Scotland developed X10.
X10 allows compatible products to talk to each other over the already existing electrical wires of a home.
All the appliances and devices are receivers, and, such as remote controls or
keypads are transmitters.
(contd…)
If you want to turn off a lamp in another room, the transmitter will issue a message in numerical code that includes the following:
-An alert to the system that it's issuing a command,
-An identifying unit number for the device that should receive the command and
-A code that contains the actual command, such as "turn off.”
Radio waves : ZigBee and Z-wave.
Insteon.
Sensors and Detectors
Sensors and Detectors play an important role in the smart home.
Smart scenarios will get information from the environment and act upon.
To understand the use of detectors, one must remember that the essence of the smart home is running scenarios.
In the smart home, scenarios run when an event occurs. Such an event can be:
- A button was pressed
-The clock reached a certain hour
Types of Sensors and Detectors
The smart home may use many types of sensors and detectors. A few are mentioned below.
Temperature Sensor
Smoke Detector
Wind Sensor
Rain Sensor
Speech Technology
focus will be on the use of speech technology in smart homes, especially for elderly people.
With a voice controlled system, virtually all control functions can be executed by voice, which also includes a voice output, a visual component is however indispensable to remind the user about the functionality he is controlling.
In the case of speech processing the walls have built-in microphones.
Moreover, displays which are needed, also in a speech dialogue application, can appear everywhere on the walls.
Setting up a Smart Home
Here are some examples of smart home products and their functions.
Cameras will track your home's exterior even if it's pitch-black outside.
A video door phone provides more than a doorbell -- you get a picture of who's at the door.
Motion sensors will send an alert when there's motion around your house, and they can even tell the difference between pets and burglars.
Door handles can open with scanned fingerprints or a four-digit code, eliminating the need to fumble for house keys.
Audio systems distribute the music from your stereo to any room with connected speakers.
Channel modulators take any video signal -- from a security camera to your favorite television station -- and make it viewable on every television in the house.
Remote controls, keypads and tabletop controllers are the means of activating the smart home applications.
Products and Services
Within the field of smart home technology products and services play an important role in creating benefits for users. In general products and services can be divided into the following categories:
-Comfort
-Energy management
-Healthcare
-Security and Safety
-Communication
Health care
Security and Safety
Top priority for many older people is the feeling of living safely and securely in their own house.
A smoke detector is installed in all projects, as near as possible to or in the kitchen.
Older people have a more frequent nightly toilet visit than younger people.
The electric or gas cooker can
be switched off via an
extra button
Communication
One of the most commonly used smart home technologies is internal and external Intercom systems.
Many mobility impaired persons will require an intercom system in order to safely answer the front door without having to go to it.
It is also possible to send the signal from the front door to a call centre where a person at the centre can talk to the visitor.
Example
Smart Home Benefits
Smart homes obviously have the ability to make life easier and more convenient.
Here are a few more examples of cool smart home tricks:
-Program your television so that your children can watch only at certain times
-Access all your favorite DVDs from any television in the home
-Turn on the coffee maker from bed.
Tremendous benefits for elderly people.
Energy saving.
Smart Home Challenges
Smart Home probably sounds like a nightmare to those people not comfortable with computers.
When planning the system, it's important to consider a few factors:
-How large will the system be?
-How intuitive will the system be to a non-user?
-How many people will be required to use the system?
-Who will know how to operate the system?
