The Chipko movement or chipol andolan was primarily a forest conservation movement in India that began in 1973 and became a rallying point for many environmental movements around the world; It created a precedent for nonviolent protest started in India. It happened at a time when there was hardly any environmental movement in the developing world, and its success meant that the world immediately took note of this nonviolent movement, which was to inspire in time many of these eco-groups, helping to curb the rapid Deforestation, exposing vested interests, raising ecological awareness, and demonstrating the viability of people's power. Above all, it awakened the existing civil society in India, which began to address the issues of tribes and marginalized people. Today, beyond the tone of eco-socialism, it is increasingly being seen as an ecofeminist movement. Although many of their leaders were men, women were not only their backbone, but also their pillar, because they were most affected by unchecked deforestation, which led to a lack of firewood and fodder, as well as water for drinking and watering . Over the years they also became major players in most of the afforestation work that took place under the Chipko movement. In 1987, the Chipko movement was awarded the Right Livelihood Award. The Chipko Aandolan is a movement that practiced the Gandhian methods of Satyagraha where male and female activists played vital roles, including Gaura Devi, Sudesha Devi, Bachni Devi and Chandi Prasad Bhatt.

History

The Chipko movement began in the 20th century in the state of Rajasthan. Amrita Devi with 84 villagers risked their lives to protect the forest trees from being shot down by order of the maharaja (king).

In the village of Khejarli, 363 Bishnois died in 1730 AD, while the protection of Khejri Green are considered sacred by the community. Little by little, a growing awareness of the ecological crisis, which stemmed from an immediate loss of livelihood caused by it, led to the growth of political activism in the region.
