BMTC has a fleet of around 6700 buses operated through 41 depots and 52 bus stations, transporting around 5.2 million people each day. The survey of travellers at various points in the city revealed that travellers are generally happy with the services provided by BMTC. "However, a strong visual architecture was necessary to separate the different buses".
BMTC bifurcated as an Independent Corporation on August 15, 1997 from KSRTC with a small fleet of around 2500 buses. The buses operated at that time did not have a specific colour mark. As and when the strength of the fleet began to grow new colours and bus brands were added. It is the experience of travellers that a large number of brands, colours and names create confusion as the induction of BS-IV buses of 12 mtr long created ambiguity among travellers with regard to Volvo AC buses, since both buses Of type they were looking for equally in colour and structure. In order to achieve easy-to-use, attractive and accessible buses with significant designs and colours, an analysis was made comparing public bus transportation in several cities in developed countries around the world, as well as other Indian cities. It was found that Seoul's public bus transportation was quite adequate for Bangalore city operations.
