Sensor Web
A Sensor Web is a type of sensor network or geographic information system (GIS) that is especially well suited for environmental monitoring. The term sensor web describes an amorphous network of spatially distributed sensor platforms (pods) that communicate with each other wirelessly.

Definition:
The Sensor Web is a macro-instrument concept that allows for the spatiotemporal understanding of an environment through coordinated efforts between multiple numbers and types of sensing platforms, including both orbital and terrestrial and both fixed and mobile. It is expected that Sensor Web will develop a macro-intelligence as a result of its distributed information with the pods reacting and adapting to their environment. The definition of a Sensor Web is an autonomous, stand-alone, sensing entity - capable of interpreting and reacting to the data measured - that did not require the presence of the World Wide Web to function.

Fielded Applications:
Sensor webs have been successfully deployed in harsh environments like deserts, mountain snowpacks, and Antarctica, in environmental science urban search and rescue and infrastructure protection applications.

Pods
A sensor web is made of a certain number of pods and each pod will usually consist of:
-one or more sensor leading to one or more data channel
-a micro-controller or microprocessor for processing,
-a radio and antenna for two-way communication,
-battery coupled with a solar cell for energy source,
-a strong protective package

Special Pod Functions
besides participating in the general Sensor Web function, the pods have other special functions. a portal pod and provides users access to the Sensor Web, The mother pod contains the master clock of the synchronous Sensor Web system. a pod with no attached sensors can be deployed as a relay with the single purpose of facilitating communication between the other pods.

Characteristics of a Sensor Web:
The number of pods may vary. The shape of the sensor web may be different depending upon the application. a particular deployment made sure each pod was in range to communicate with at least two other pods.
