Ultrasonic machining, or strictly "ultrasonic vibration machining", is a subtraction process that removes material from the surface of a part through high frequency and low amplitude vibrations of a tool against the surface of the material in the presence of particles Fine abrasives. The tool travels vertically or orthogonally to the workpiece surface at 0.05 to 0.125 mm (0.002 to 0.005 inch) amplitudes. The fine abrasive grains are mixed with water to form a slurry that is distributed through the part and tip of the tool. The typical grain sizes of the abrasive material vary from 100 to 1000, where the smaller grains (greater number of grain) produce smoother surface finishes.
Ultrasonic vibration machining is typically used in fragile materials as well as materials with high hardness due to the microcracking mechanics.
Working Principle of Ultrasonic Machining
The time spent on the ultrasonic machine depends entirely on the frequency of the vibrating tool. It also depends on the grain size of the abrasive slurry, stiffness and viscosity as well. The grains used in the abrasive fluid are usually boron carbide or silicon carbide because they are rigid than others. The used abrasive can be easily transported if the viscosity of the suspension fluid is lower.
