A turbocharger or colloquially turbocharged is a forced induction driven turbine device that increases the efficiency and power of the internal combustion engine by forcing additional air into the combustion chamber. This improvement over the output power of a naturally aspirated engine is due to the fact that the compressor can force more air and, proportionally, more fuel in the combustion chamber than the atmospheric pressure (and in this case the air intakes ).

Turbochargers were originally known as turbosuperchargers when all forced induction devices were classified as superchargers. Today, the term "supercharger" is typically applied only to mechanically driven forced induction devices. The key difference between a turbocharger and a conventional compressor is that a compressor is driven mechanically by the engine, often through a belt connected to the crankshaft, while a turbocharger is powered by a turbine driven by the engine exhaust. Compared to a mechanically driven compressor, turbochargers tend to be more efficient, but are less sensitive. Twincharger refers to a motor with a supercharger and a turbocharger.

Turbochargers are commonly used in truck engines, automobiles, trains, airplanes and construction equipment. They are most commonly used with Otto cycle and Diesel cycle internal combustion engines. They have also been found useful in automotive fuel cells. Forced induction dates back to the late 19th century when Gottlieb Daimler patented the technique of using a gear-driven pump to force air into an internal combustion engine in 1885. The turbocharger was invented by Swiss engineer Alfred Büchi (1879-1959) , head of research for diesel engines at Gebrüder Sulzer (now called Sulzer), a motor manufacturing company in Winterthur, which received a patent in 1905 for using an exhaust-driven compressor to force air into an internal combustion engine for increase output power, but it took another 20 years for the idea to come to fruition. During World War I, the French engineer Auguste Rateau mounted turbochargers in Renault engines that fed several French fighters with some success. In 1918, General Electric engineer Sanford Alexander Moss connected a turbocharger to a Liberty V12 aircraft engine. The engine was tested at Pikes Peak, Colorado, at 14,000 feet (4,300 m) to demonstrate that it could eliminate the power loss typically experienced by internal combustion engines as a result of reduced air pressure and high altitude.

Turbochargers were first used on production aircraft engines such as Leona Napier in the 1920s, although they were less common than motor-driven centrifugal superchargers. Ships and locomotives equipped with turbocharged diesel engines began to appear in the 1920s. Turbochargers were also used in aviation, the most used by the United States. During World War II, notable examples of US turbocharged aircraft - which included mass-produced General Electric designed for use in US aviation - include the Flying Fortress B-17, the Liberator B-24, the P- 38 and the P-47 Lightning. The technology was also used in experimental accessories by several other manufacturers, in particular a variety of prototype Focke-Wulf Fw 190 models powered by inline engines, and some developments for their design come from DVL, a predecessor of today's DLR agency in day, but the need for advanced high temperature metals in the turbine, which were not available for production during wartime, kept them out of widespread use.

Turbochargers are widely used in cars and commercial vehicles because they allow lower-capacity engines to have improved fuel economy, reduced emissions, higher power and significantly higher torque.
