Transport contributes throughout the development of a country and, therefore, plays a vital rhythm towards its progress. India, which is mainly rural in nature, road links have clear advantages over other modes of transport. While the impact of the location of the road on the environment is one of the main concerns of the road engineer and the public. If roads are not located, planned and designed properly, they will be subject to erosion and may contribute sediment to streams. However, there must be control of soil and water since these are two basic services to protect the structure of the road and, therefore, the design, construction and maintenance procedures must also be evaluated repeatedly to minimize erosion problems and sedimentation.

However erosion can be controlled to a large extent by an appropriate geometric design and with adequate provision for drainage and adjustment of landscape development programs. Although some standardization of methods is possible to minimize soil erosion. Although the erosion process is a natural phenomenon accelerated by human activity, the technical capacity to assess the severity of the erosion problem and the proper planning and design of preventive and corrective measures are essential to obtain satisfactory economic and environmental methods for the control of erosion.

Surface erosion mechanism

• When raindrops hit the surface of the slope

• The impact of the raindrop separates the particle from the soil

• The runoff water that flows on the surface of the slope transports the separated particle and this also helps to contribute to a greater detachment.

Types of erosion

• Wind erosion

• Rain erosion

Erosion of the wind

• Open slope of loose and dry non-cohesive soil

• Lack of shelter from the wind

• Exposed surface without any shield

Factors that control wind erosion

• Wind speed

• Particle size of the material exposed to the wind

• Soil moisture content

• Vegetable cover.
