An escalator is a vertical conveyor in the form of a moving escalator - a conveyor that carries people between the floors of a building. It consists of an individually driven stepper motor chain. These steps are guided on both sides by a pair of tracks that force them to remain horizontal.

Escalators are used around the world in places where elevators would be impractical. Major areas of use include department stores, shopping centers, airports, transit systems (railroad / railway stations), convention centers, hotels, stadiums and public buildings.

Escalators have the ability to move a large number of people, and can be placed in the same physical space as a ladder. They have no waiting intervals (except during heavy traffic), can be used to guide people to the main exits or special exposures, and can be waterproofed for outdoor use. An escalator that does not work can function like a normal ladder, while many other means of transportation become useless when they break.

Escalators, such as moving walkways, move at constant speeds of about 0.3-0.6 meters (1-2 feet) per second. The typical angle of inclination of an escalator to the horizontal is 30 degrees, and the total difference in height can be about 18 meters (60 feet) or more. Modern escalators have a single piece of aluminum or stainless steel steps that move in a system of tracks in a continuous loop.

Escalators have three typical configuration options: parallel (escalating and moving escalators side by side or separated by a distance, often seen at subway stations and multilevel movie theaters), crisscross ( Minimizes space requirements by stacking escalators that go in one direction, often used in department stores or malls), and multiple parallels (two or more escalators together that travel in one direction alongside one or two escalators in the same bank Traveling in the other direction).

As a safety precaution, escalators are required to have moving handrails that are maintained at the pace of step movement. This helps the riders to stay firm, especially when climbing the escalators. Occasionally, a handrail will move at a slightly different speed from the steps, causing it to "creep" slowly forward or backward relative to the steps. The loss of synchronization between the handrail and the step speed can result from slippage and wear. As a result, escalators must have moving hand rails that move at the same speed as escalator escalators.

The direction of escalator movement (up or down) can be permanently set, or manually controlled depending on the predominant flow of the crowd, or automatically controlled. In some configurations, the steering is controlled by the first person, either at the bottom or at the top (the system is programmed so that the steering is not reversed while a passenger is on the escalator).

It can be understood in the following video:
