Hydraulic turbines transfer the energy of a fluid fluid to a rotating shaft. A turbine is something that rotates or rotates. Learn more about how hydraulic turbines work in this article.

• Leonardo da Vinci once said: "The power of water has changed more in this world than emperors or kings." It was rightly pointed out by him as at present hydroelectric energy, the energy generated by water, has an important contribution to the world total. All this was possible thanks to the development of hydraulic turbines that can transfer the energy of the water flowing to the axes of the dynamos that produce electric energy.

• Hydraulic turbines
The hydraulic turbines have a row of blades mounted on the rotating shaft or a rotating plate. Flowing liquid, mainly water, as it passes through the Hydraulic Turbine which strikes the blades of the turbine and rotates the shaft. As it flows through the hydraulic turbine the velocity and pressure of the liquid reduce, these result in the development of the torque and the rotation of the turbine shaft. There are different forms of Hydraulic Turbines in use depending on the operational requirements. For each specific use a particular type of hydraulic turbine provides optimum output.

• Classification of the hydraulic turbines: 
Based on the path of the flow
Water can pass through the hydraulic turbines in different flow paths. Based on the liquid flow path The hydraulic turbines can be classified into three types.
1. Axial Flow Hydraulic Turbines: This category of Hydraulic Turbines has the flow path of the liquid mainly parallel to the axis of rotation. Kaplan turbines have liquid flow primarily in the axial direction.
2. Hydraulic Radial Flow Turbines: Such Hydraulic Turbines have the liquid flowing mainly in a plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation.
3. Mixed Flow Hydraulic Turbines: For most of the Hydraulic Turbines used there is a significant component of both axial and radial flows. These types of hydraulic turbines are called mixed flow turbines. Francis Turbine is an example of mixed flow type, in Francis Turbine the water enters in radial direction and leaves in the axial direction.

None of the Hydraulic Turbines is purely axial flow or purely radial flow. There is always a radial flow component in axial flow and axial flow turbines in radial flow turbines.
• Classification of Hydraulic Turbines: 

Based on pressure change

A more important criterion for the classification of Hydraulic Turbines is whether or not the pressure of the liquid changes as it flows through the rotor of the Hydraulic Turbines. Based on the pressure change the hydraulic turbines can be classified as of two types.
1. Impulse Turbine: The pressure of the liquid does not change as it flows through the rotor of the machine. In Impulse Turbines, the pressure change only occurs in the nozzles of the machine. One such example of impulse turbine is Pelton Wheel.
2. Reaction turbine: The pressure of the liquid changes as it flows through the rotor of the machine. The change in the speed of the fluid and the reduction of its pressure provoke a reaction in the blades of the turbine; This is where the turbine of the known reaction may have been derived. Francis and Kaplan Turbines fall into the Reaction Turbines category.
