Hardfacing is a metalworking process in which the harder or more resistant material is applied to a base metal. It is welded to the base material, and generally takes the form of specialized electrodes for arc welding or fill bar for oxyacetylene and TIG welding. Powdered metal alloys are used in (PTA) also called powder plasma welding system and thermal spraying processes such as HVOF, plasma spray, spray and fuse, etc ...

Hardfacing can be applied to a new part during production to increase its wear resistance, or it can be used to restore a worn surface. Arc welding hardfacing is a surface operation to extend the life of industrial components, preventively in the new components, or as part of a maintenance program. The result of significant savings in machine downtime and production costs has meant that this process has been adopted in many industries such as steel, cement, mining, petrochemicals, power, sugar cane and food. According to the results of an experimental study, the hard coating processes of SMAW (armored metal arc welding) and GMAW (gas arc arc welding) were effective in reducing wear on the plumber's plow. With the SMAW and GMAW hardfacing processes, the life of the plow was increased approximately 2 times.

Extensive research work has led to the development of a wide range of alloys and welding procedures. The selection of the optimum alloy is performed taking into account the conditions of service of the component and the feedback of the performance of the service. For each industrial application and wear phenomena, there is a welding electrode to provide wear resistance.
