Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Swachh Bharat or Clean India Mission English) is a campaign in India aimed at clearing the streets, roads and infrastructure of cities in India, smaller cities and rural areas. Swachh Bharat's goals include eliminating outdoor defecation through community-owned and community-owned toilets and establishing a mechanism to monitor the use of latrines. Led by the Government of India, the mission aims to achieve an India Open-Defecation Free (ODF) before October 2, 2019, the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's birth, by building 12 million baths in India. Rural India with a projected cost of ₹ 1.96 lakh crore ($ 30 billion).
The campaign was officially launched on October 2, 2014 in Rajghat, New Delhi by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It is the largest clean-up facility in India to date, with 3 million government employees, school students and university students from all over India participating in 4,041 statutory cities, towns and associated rural areas.
The mission contains two sub-missions: Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Gramin), which operates under the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation; and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Urban), which operates under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The mission includes ambassadors and activities such as real-time national monitoring and updates from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that are working to achieve their goals.
