I have dual chamber Medtronic Sensia pacemaker. I am due for interrogation. I would like to see typical reports that I should be getting.

Pacemaker or defibrillator has the ability to communicate through the skin with a programmer we have in the office. Pacemaker interrogation is a process to check the function of a pacemaker to make sure it is working properly and the batteries are in good condition. In this procedure, a physician waves a wand connected to a computer on the patient's chest. The wand and pacemaker communicate wirelessly, allowing the computer to extract data from the pacemaker's memory. The computer will also check the battery life of the pacemaker. This is not painful for the patient, although patients sometimes feel stunned or strangers during a pacemaker interrogation.

Patients who use pacemakers usually receive a pacemaker interrogation during follow-up appointments after initial implantation of the pacemaker. The doctor will retrieve information about cardiac events from the device memory, confirm that the batteries are still in good condition and make sure the wires are working correctly. If necessary, the wand can be used to remotely change pacemaker programming.

Doctors often recommend a pacemaker interrogation before any surgical procedure, even if the pacemaker has been checked recently. The electrocautery and other tools used during surgery may interfere with the device, especially if the batteries are low. Checking your function before surgery will allow care providers to make the necessary adjustments to the patient care plan to keep the patient safe during the procedure.

This procedure takes about 10 to 15 minutes and is scheduled as an outpatient appointment. Patients may go to the hospital or a cardiac clinic, and pacemaker interrogation does not require any special preparation on the part of the patient. Before the procedure, the doctor can conduct a brief interview, ask the patient about their general health level and collect information about any recent heart events. When the pacemaker interrogation is over, the physician can advise the patient about any programming changes made and the duration of the battery available.

Pacemaker checks are scheduled at regular intervals throughout the life of the patient. The goal is to identify any problem as soon as possible so that medical intervention can be provided before the device begins to malfunction. Patients who have missed appointments should reschedule as soon as possible and patients who have difficulty providing follow-up care may be able to receive financial assistance through a charity program for patients with heart problems. A hospital or clinic usually has information about these programs and can provide patients with contact information, applications and other resources that may be helpful.
