Speech is the vocalised form of communication used by humans which is based on the syntactic combination of elements extracted from the lexicon. Each spoken word is created from the phonetic combination of a limited set of vocal and consonant vocal sound units (phonemes). These vocabularies, the syntax that structures them, and their sets of speech sound units are different, creating many thousands of different and unintelligible human languages. The vocal abilities that allow humans to produce speech also allow them to sing.

There is a gestural form of human communication for the deaf in the form of sign language. Speech in some cultures has become the basis of written language, often one that differs in its vocabulary, syntax and phonetics from its associated speech, a situation called diglossia. In addition to its use in communication, some psychologists such as Lev Vygotsky suggest that speech is used internally in mental processes to improve and organize cognition in the form of an internal monologue.

Speech is investigated in terms of the production of speech and speech perception of the sounds used in the vocal language. Other research topics refer to the repetition of speech, the ability to map words heard in the vocalizations necessary to recreate them, which plays a key role in the expansion of vocabulary in children and speech errors. Several academic disciplines study this; including acoustics, psychology, speech pathology, linguistics, cognitive science, communication studies, otolaryngology and computer science. Another area of research is how the human brain in its different areas, such as Broca's area and Wernicke's area, underlies speech.

It is controversial to what extent human speech is unique; in which animals also communicate with vocalizations. While none in nature has compatible vocabularies, research on the nonverbal abilities of language-trained apes such as Washoe and Kanzi raises the possibility that they may have these abilities. The evolutionary origins of speech are unknown and are subject to much debate and speculation.
