The elocution is the study of formal speech in pronunciation, grammar, style and tone. In classical Western rhetoric, elocution was one of the five major disciplines of pronunciation, which was the art of uttering speeches. The speakers were trained not only in proper diction, but in the proper use of gestures, posture and dress. (Another area of the rhetoric, elocutio, was not related to elocution, and instead referred to the style of writing proper to discourse).

The elocution emerged as a formal discipline during the eighteenth century. One of its important figures was Thomas Sheridan, actor and father of Richard Brinsley Sheridan. Thomas Sheridan's lectures on elocution, gathered in Lectures on Elocution (1762) and his Lectures on Reading (1775), provided instructions for marking and reading aloud passages from literature. Another actor, John Walker, published his two-volume Elements of Elocution in 1781, which provided detailed instruction on voice control, gestures, pronunciation and emphasis.

With the publication of these and similar works, the elocution gained a wider public interest. While adequate speech training has been an important part of private education for many centuries, the rise of a middle class in the Western countries in the 19th century (and the corresponding rise in public education) aroused great interest in Teaching of elocution; It became a basic element of the school curriculum. American elocution students drew selections of what they popularly called "Speakers." At the end of the century, several texts of the President circulated throughout the United States, including the New Youth Speaker of McGuffey, the Handbook of Elocution and Reading, the Star Speaker, and the popular Speaker of Delsarte. Some of these texts even included pictorial representations of body movements and gestures to increase written descriptions.
