The Samaja is a daily newspaper of Odia published in Cuttack, Odisha, India; Started in 1919, it is one of the oldest newspapers in India. Utkalamani Gopabandhu Das, a prominent freedom fighter and social worker, initiated him as a Satyabadi weekly in the Puri district of Odisha to facilitate the struggle for freedom and revive the dying language of Odia. Under the leadership of Gopabandhu, and with the support of local people, the role grew in prominence. In 1928, just before Gopabandhu's death, the newspaper was handed over to Lok Sevak Mandal, a non-profit organization initiated by freedom fighter Lala Lajapatrai.

In Odisha, Samaja is seen as a reliable and impartial newspaper. To reach the most remote readers, the Samaja has ten editions in Balasore, Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Sambalpur, Rourkella, Kolkota, Vizag, Koraput, Angul and Berhampur, as well as an online edition and an edition of e-paper. Mr. Bamapada Tripathy, eminent journalist, is the editor of the newspaper. In addition, it publishes a popular weekly called 'Samaja Saptahika'.

History

The founder of the Samaja, Utkalmani Gopabandhu Das, was a fighter for freedom and a social reformer. He was a fervent supporter of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation and was involved in the struggle for freedom. Moreover, Gandhi is said to have been influenced by the simple life of Gopabandhu and after they came in contact with one another, Gandhi decided to follow a simple lifestyle. Gopabandhu led journalism to facilitate reform. He published a monthly magazine called "Satyabadi". Later, on 10 October 1919, Samaja was released weekly. The day was chosen to coincide with Vijayadashami, one of the largest Hindu festivals. He was the first editor of the weekly. With the support of Acharya Harihar Das, Pandit Das Nilakantha, Samaja continued highlighting the faults of the British government, and was imprisoned. In 1928, before the death of Gopababudhu, Samaja was delivered to the Society of the Servants of the People (SOPS), a nonprofit organization founded by Lala Lajpatrai. In his will, Gopabandhu said that under SOPS, Samaja continue to contribute to, political, educational and economic social development of Odisha.
