Fabric Formwork is a building technology that involves the use of structural membranes as the main face material for concrete molds. Unlike traditional formwork, the material is highly flexible and can be deflected under the pressure of fresh concrete. The resulting shapes exhibit curvature as well as excellent surface finishes which are generally not associated with concrete structures. The concrete of casting of tiles implies the casting of concrete in forms made with flexible formwork. This provides the potential to produce shapes that are both structurally efficient and architecturally exciting in a relatively inexpensive and practical manner. By careful shaping of the fabric it is possible to produce complex shapes which otherwise would be difficult and costly to produce using conventional formwork systems. This book contains six essays describing collaboration between the University of Edinburgh and East London, together with the Center for Architectural and Structural Technology (CAST) at the University of Manitoba, in their detailed and practical research on concrete and formwork. Richly illustrated with photographs and diagrams and containing new and innovative research, this book offers the architect, the engineer and the student the inspiration and technical guidance in this re-emergent material.
