The Vijayawada Railway Division (formerly the Bezawada Railway Division) is one of the six railroad divisions under the Central Railroad Zone of the Indian Railways. The headquarters of the division is in Vijayawada. It was formed as one of eight divisions in Southern Railway on May 16, 1956. After the formation of the South Central Railway Zone, the division was integrated into it on October 2, 1966.
The division is located entirely in the state of Andhra Pradesh. It has a width of 957.23 km (594.80 mi) and a race track of 1,646.72 km (1,023.22 mi). It has a total electrified route of 733.25 km (455.62 mi) and a total track of 1,928 km (1,198 mi). The current Divisional Head of Railways is R.Dhanunjayulu.
South Central Railway was formed on 02-10-1966 when Hubli and Vijayawada Divisions of the Southern Railway and Sholapur and Central Railway Secunderabad Divisions were carved and merged into a new Zone. Subsequently, the Guntakal division of the Southern Railway merged with the South Central Railway on 02-10-1977 and the Sholapur Division was refounded with the Central Railway. Secunderabad division was divided into two divisions viz. Secunderabad and Hyderabad on 17-02-1978. Following the reorganization of the zones and divisions with effect from 01-04-2003, two new divisions, namely Guntur and Nanded, were duly operationalized by moving the Hubli Division to the newly formed South Western Railway.
