The ad hoc vehicle network (VANET) is a peculiar subclass of the mobile ad-hoc network (MANET) that has the potential to improve road safety and provide traveler comfort. It has now gained a significant share of the interest of researchers and has become very popular. This paper has three important contributions. First, an A * (VBA *) route-based scheduling algorithm based on the vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) is proposed to calculate the route with the shortest travel time or the lowest oil consumption, depending on two sources of Real-time traffic information. The first is the registered traffic information of the water segment through which the vehicle has passed. This traffic information is further exchanged between vehicles when they enter the transmission range of the IEEE 802.11p wireless link in the VANET. The second is the traffic information provided by Google Map. Similar procedure is performed with AODV. Finally, simulations are performed and the results are compared to each other.
