Road Safety Assembly or Lesson for children from 3 to 7 years (foundation to the end of the first key stage) (10 to 20 minutes, depending on the time available)


Accessories: wear a high visibility coat or vest. Buy through the Brake store (very cheap). Also take a sturdy toy truck rolling in a straight line, and a torch.

"Today we are going to talk about road safety.

I'm going to start by saying something really sad. Every day children are badly hurt by traffic on the roads of this country, while children are walking or cycling. We've all fallen and we've hurt our knees, right? Children who are injured on our roads are much more injured than that. Some are so badly injured that they do not improve or even die.

Now I'm going to tell you something really good. We can all learn really easy things to keep us safer near the roads and we will do this in this lesson, so we can be sure.

Can someone tell me some types of traffic?

(Car / bus / truck / fire engine / motorcycle etc)

Can anyone make the noises that this traffic does?

(Children make traffic noises)

That's one of the useful things about traffic. Sometimes you can use your EARS to listen to it.

The traffic is not only noisy, it is also FAST. This means that it comes quickly. Does anyone know why traffic can move as fast, faster than you on your legs?

Let's do an experiment, to see if the wheels are faster than the legs

(Children keep their thumbs up and down and use them as a basis for discussion. Why are these things safe or dangerous?

I think we have all done very well there and we think very hard about how to stay safe. Let's have another round of applause.
