Abstract

The technique of road extraction from remote sensing (RS) image has been a hot topic of research in recent years, as an important part of updating traffic management, city planning, road surveillance, GPS navigation and map. In this letter, after analyzing different road features and model of the road, the methods of road clearance were categorized into classification-based methods, knowledge-based methods, mathematical morphology, active contour model and dynamic programming. First of all, intervention factors were analyzed for road facilities, road models, existing difficulties and road clearance. Secondly, the principle of road extraction, the advantages and disadvantages of various methods and research achievements were briefly exposed. After this, different road clearance algorithms were compared with road characteristics, test samples and deficiencies. In the end, the results of the research in the recent years were summarily summarized, it is clear that using only one type of road facilities is difficult to achieve an excellent drainage effect. Therefore, in order to achieve good results, according to the actual application of road extraction, many methods should be aligned. In future, how to realize full road clearance from the RS image is still a compulsory but challenging and important research topic.
